Chip Detector Kits for Radial Engines

If you do not have a Chip Detector installed already we strongly urge you to buy one before the start of next season.  They are cheap in comparison to the value of your engine but may be responsible for saving that engine someday.

Simply put, the chip detector has a magnetic engine sump plug that attracts any metal.  When there is enough metal to bridge the core of the plug to engine and airframe ground a warning light in the cockpit illuminates alerting the operator of metal contamination in the engine.

If the metal contamination is found early it almost always saves costly repair or even total engine loss.

One important note: the system has a built in push to test light in the cockpit but this only tests the bulb.  I strongly recommend a complete circuit test every couple of days.  Connect a jumper wire or ground out the chip plug at the engine sump to see if the indicator light comes on.  If this test is not completed during your pre-flight inspections you could be relying on an inoperative warning system.
