WAAS issues? Posted by Cheryl, May 26, 2010
You may have heard that one of the WAAS satellites (PRN 135) is or has failed.
That means WAAS users are only receiving corrections from one correcting satellite instead of two.
In reality, 2 satellites are really one more than we need for Western Canada users. As long as we see
one of the satellites we will receive differential correction. And the failing satellite is not one
we typically use in the West since PRN 138 is much closer.
Arguably, 2 satellites does make the system more fail safe but I don't believe WAAS users in the Prairies
will be affected too much.
I can say that based on the current info I have (see this article) - quote:
"... users may experience a temporary loss of
service 3-5 times this year for up to five minutes each
while WAAS Uplink Switchovers occur." (dated April 15, 2010)
The FAA is investigating all possible solutions but the info out there seems to indicate the remedial action
will not be immediate (short term). I recommend you know what your options are, but don't panic!
For those using Satloc receivers, we can program them to accept Omnistar subscribed signal "if you're
service disruption is unbearable", but I say again, I don't think that will be your experience.
The Omnistar signal fee is $800 USD per year, but you can subscribe to only a 3-month signal for
$450 USD, with each additional month being $150 USD if needed.
Re-programming is fast and inexpensive. And we are prepared to help you when needed.
SATLOC makes good products. We provide the service.
As I learn more, I will try to keep you posted.
